How do I go about having my companies website be one of the first sites to come up in a web search? I have a company who is hosting my website but I cant even get the website to come up under any searches. If anyone has this, about how much does it cost? Thank you

You will need to promote your site intensively.

You will need to submit your website to directories even the major ones like Google to get listed at all. Some of the larger ones will list you automatically if you have one of their existing web sites linking to yours.

You will need to have keyword rich content.

You may want to add a blog to your site and update it regularly.

You may want to write articles and press releases as well on a regular basis to promote your site on other sites and directories.

You will want to put your keywords in your title as well as other non visible places like in related alt tags of images.

You probably want to have your main keywords in your domain name or setup a sub-domain of your primary domain and promote that name instead to get higher ratings as well.

You will need to have many related high ranking websites linked to your site without you linking back to them.

You will want to stay away from Flash as search engines cannot read images or sound files for content. Remember the embed tag was never a part of the HTML language and therefore is invalid to use.

You want to use text wherever possible and not images to relay your content.

You want your pages to be compliant with the international standards for both HTML and CSS at a minimum.

You want your pages to be fully functional even if a user turns off JavaScript.

You do not want to use tables for positioning of non tabular data. Tables have been abused in the past to place images on web pages in certain spots. That was never the intended purpose of tables. CSS is the preferred positioning tool. Also stay away from deprecated tags such as center and font in HTML.

You may need to get into pay advertising such as pay per click.

As far as how much would it cost that would depend on the keywords you ant to be on the top of the list for and how much you are willing to pay to get there. For that reason I choose to do it all myself and take what I can get at this point. You can read up on SEO as well as SEM. SEO is search engine optimization and SEM is Search Engine marketing.

Those are just a few of the things I can think of off the top of my head but it is a great start for you and a lot of work.
